    BEAUMONT, Texas (BP) -- The Disaster Relief Ministry of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention now has three incident command units set up in East Texas to help churches minister to residents impacted by last week's historic Tropical Storm Imelda.

    "We have three incident management teams in place and are getting things organized," said Scottie Stice, the director of disaster relief for the SBTC. "We have assessors in place, and our teams will begin to arrive this weekend or early next week and everything will be in full swing." Read More

    GRAPEVINE, Texas (BP)-- As U.S. and international aid agencies pour resources into the Bahama Islands and eastern United States in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, some southeast Texas homeowners still await relief from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey two years ago, according to Southern Baptists of Texas Convention pastors in the region.

    SBTC field ministry strategists Dennis Parrish and Sonny Hathaway serve Southeast Texas communities where Harvey damaged or destroyed 738,000 homes and 25-30 SBC churches, and more than 30 pastors' homes. Read More

    EL PASO, Texas (BP) -- Four veteran Disaster Relief chaplains from the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC) packed quickly to drive from different regions of the state to El Paso to minister to victims, families and the community following the Aug. 3 shootings at the Cielo Vista Walmart.

    The four men, all pastors, arrived in El Paso on Aug. 7 and began to serve. None is new to helping others deal with tragedy and grief. Read More

  • Southern Baptists of Texas celebrate 20th anniversary

    HOUSTON, Texas (BP) -- The 20th anniversary of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention drew more than 1,300 Southern Baptists, including 1,027 messengers, to the SBTC's annual meeting.

    The theme for the milestone anniversary, "Entrusted: A Gospel Legacy for the Coming Generations," came from 2 Timothy 2:2 and opened each session as pastors and denominational leaders preached from 2 Timothy 2-4.

    SBC President J.D. Greear closed out the Nov. 12-13 meeting with a sermon Tuesday night. Read More

  • Along Harvey's path, churches reflect on 1-year mark

    SOUTHEAST TEXAS (BP) -- Hurricane Harvey swept disaster across the Texas Gulf Coast one year ago, first pummeling Rockport and Port Aransas with destructive winds, then stalling over Houston for three days before moving to the Golden Triangle with rainfall of up to 60 inches. Dozens were killed and thousands were displaced.

    Separate gatherings marking the anniversary of the disaster were held at Southern Baptists of Texas Convention churches the final weekend in August, the order of the three commemorations tracking Harvey's path through Rockport, Humble and Beaumont.

    Each event featured hot dogs, snow cones, outdoor games, music and speakers, SBTC Disaster Relief (DR) associate Wally Leverle said in describing the block parties. Read More

    SAN ANTONIO, Texas (BP) --- The 14-year-old daughter of a Southern Baptist pastor was reportedly among 26 people killed when an armed man opened fire during Sunday morning (Nov. 5) worship services at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a congregation about 35 miles southeast of San Antonio.

    GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico (BP) -- Flooded streets, potable water shortages, communications disruptions, power outages and six-foot-long iguanas were among the obstacles encountered by eight Southern Baptists of Texas Convention volunteers in completing initial projects to facilitate Southern Baptist Disaster Relief efforts in Puerto Rico following hurricanes Irma and Maria.

    VIDOR, Texas (BP) -- Traditionally trained Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams are receiving an influx of new workers in the form of newly minted volunteers signing on with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention's Texas Relief program, and college students recruited from across the United States to participate in the North American Mission Board's Send Relief outreach.

    Over the weekend of Oct 7, the first college crews from Send Relief descended upon churches in the Golden Triangle where teams of college kids were assigned to work alongside seasoned SBTC disaster relief volunteers. Read More
